In 2021, we launched our new strategy. It identified three audiences we will prioritise moving forward:
Supporting young people – with a focus on trauma.
Fighting for the mental health of people in poverty.
Becoming a truly anti-racist organisation - supporting people from racialised communities.
We commissioned research to find out more about the experiences, needs and preferences of people from these communities.
With Sport England investment, we were also able to capture insights and recommendations relating to physical activity and mental health. The key findings are outlined in this summary report.
Supporting young people – with a focus on trauma
Fighting for the mental health of people living in poverty
Race and mental health
Young people – research conducted by Andthen.
People living in poverty – research conducted by 2CV.
Racialised communities – research conducted by The Unmistakables.
For each audience we look at their relationship between physical activity and mental health, the barriers they experience and recommendations to better support their mental health in physical activity.
To bring this to life, we have included quotes from people from these communities. We also link to case examples to show what good practice is.
Each section ends with a film from our webinar.
Everyone is different!
This report is split into three distinct audience groups. But we recognise the interconnected nature of categorisations such as ethnicity, class and gender. To support people with mental health problems, a person-centred, intersectional approach is needed.
