Support your LGBTIQ+ colleagues
Over the past decade, we have seen employers take huge steps forwards in creating more inclusive and welcoming spaces at work for people who identify as LGBTIQ+. We know that organisations who value diversity attract more top talent and perform better than those who don’t. So how can you go about making sure LGBTIQ+ staff feel comfortable and supported at your organisation?
1. Start with your recruitment process Make sure it’s really clear on your company website and job descriptions that LGBTIQ+ staff are welcome at your organisation. When listing benefits, make sure to mention any LGBTIQ+ staff networks, or any support or programmes you offer for LGBTIQ+ staff.
2. Include equality and diversity training from day 1 Make sure all new staff take part in equality and diversity training which covers how to support staff and colleagues from a range of backgrounds and explains your policies in detail.
3. Adopt a zero-tolerance approach to homophobic bullying Make it really clear to staff that homophobic or transphobic bullying will not be tolerated at your organisation. Deal with any complaints or reports swiftly and appropriately.
4. Develop support programmes for LGBTIQ+ staff Support programmes like mentoring opportunities, staff networks, seminars, conferences and training opportunities can all go a long way in making LGBTIQ+ staff feel engaged and included in your workplace.
5. Support your wider LGBTIQ+ community Share information with LGBTIQ+ staff about local Pride events, sponsor a Pride Party and ask staff if they would like to share their experiences to celebrate things like National Coming Out Day.
6. Involve allies Offer allies the opportunity to support and get involved with LGBTIQ+ staff networks and events. Allies can provide support and amplify the voices of LGBTIQ+ staff.
